One Word

Welcome to the second half of the first month of 2013. Already! How’s that new diet working for you? Or your goal of reading through the Bible this year? I thought so.

No resolutions for me. Gave them up years ago. But I do look for a phrase. Last year’s was Be Present.

This year I did pick a phrase, but after seeing this little video, I’ve narrowed it down to one word. Take a minute and check this idea out for yourself. See if it might work for you.

One Word.

My word for 2013 is “calling.” It may not resonate with you like the word “simplicity,” which my friend Shelley chose, or “Selah,” which is Mark Batterson’s word for the year. But it’s a word that’s always had huge implications for me – stirring a passion, inspiring purpose, directing my plans.

I remember the first time I declared my calling. At nine years old, I could hardly define the word, but something stirred – a haunting call – even then. We were on our way down to the ice cream shop on 27th Avenue in Miami – my mother, father, sister and I. They served a tangerine sherbet there that no ice cream has ever duplicated for me.

My dad asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Boldly and without hesitation I said, “I’m going to be a missionary.”

I doubt I even knew what a missionary was, but I knew something tugged at my heart. My relationship with Jesus began earlier that year and the call was in it’s infancy, but real. It continued to develop throughout my life and this year I want to re-examine it and see what else God may have to say about how I walk it out.

What About You?

Might you choose a word for 2013 – just one simple word? It’s simple to do and gives a focus without feeling overwhelming. I bet you’ll have some stories to tell come December about a path your life took because of that.one.word.
